Get ready, New Westminster! A unique culinary experience has arrived on Belmont Street, bringing the authentic taste of chai and globally inspired street food right to our doorstep. Chaiiwala of London, owned by the enthusiastic Ajmal Gundhra, has quickly become a local spot to explore, and its story is as rich as the brews it offers.

Ajmal, along with his partner Shiraz, have brought this international brand, originating in the UK in 2015, to Canada, with New West being one of their latest locations, opening about four and a half months ago. Despite some current construction in the area, Ajmal's passion for New Westminster is clear. He recalls its historical significance as the original downtown of Vancouver, appreciating its beautiful buildings, spaces, and diverse community. He felt that New West would be receptive to new brands and different ethnicities, a sentiment that has proven true with a pleasant opening.

But what exactly is Chaiiwala of London? Ajmal describes it as a "quick-serve restaurant" (QSR), a delightful mix between a McDonald's and a Starbucks. Their claim to fame? Their karak chai, a signature tea brewed for a remarkable 52 minutes to achieve its distinctive flavor. While you can grab your cup in less than a minute thanks to their efficient system, the care and passion behind each brew are evident.

Beyond their impressive array of chai – including the unique pink chai from the Himalayas and a variety of flavored options like ginger, saffron, and caramel – Chaiiwala offers a diverse menu that truly blends global tastes. You can find everything from refreshing nimbu pani (a South Asian lemonade) and indulgent falooda (a milk-based drink with unique textures and flavors) to familiar favorites with a twist, like kebab wraps, Bombay toasties, and even a gulab jamun cheesecake. Ajmal proudly states that their menu features influences from the UK, East Africa, India, and Pakistan, offering something for everyone.

Strategically located on Belmont Street, right beside Tim Hortons and across from Starbucks, Chaiiwala aims to cater to a broad audience, including the local South Asian population who appreciate their authentic flavors. Ajmal noted that many in this community enjoy sweeter beverages, and Chaiiwala provides a delicious alternative to traditional coffee. The location also benefits from the density of nearby residential buildings and the presence of medical clinics, creating a steady flow of potential customers.

Despite being a relatively new addition, Chaiiwala has already made a positive impression, even sparking a humorous meme on a local foodies’ Facebook group. While current construction presents a temporary challenge, Ajmal encourages everyone to not let it deter them from experiencing what Chaiiwala has to offer, promising a rewarding "cup of chai after all the distractions".

Ajmal's dedication to growth is evident, with 21 stores already open in Canada and plans for another 20 in 2025. However, his motivation goes beyond just expansion. He sees Chaiiwala as a legacy, bringing the flavors of India to all corners of Canada, much like sushi and sashimi have become widely enjoyed. He wants Chaiiwala to be remembered as a brand that connects people through a shared love of chai.
